Hello Gents.
I'm here in the States, with a left shifting '99 500 4spd. I'm about to do the Right shift converstion. I wanted to install the sealed bearing in order to use SAE90 oil in the gearbox instead of the grease. Snidal manual calls for a 6303 ZZ bearing...about $10USD here locally. Our State-side RE supplier recommends a "sealed bearing kit", which has 2 bearings, O-ring and felt washers...for $75USD. Am I over-spending this with the "kit", when it can be done with bearing purchase from local auto jobber?
I certainly don't mind spending the money, if it's a better approach. Any imput would be appreciated.

Sounds about right to me at $75USD as the same kit on this site is £40 plus Taxes & Postage that's part no (( 90118 BEARING REPLACEMENT KIT, SEALED FOR 4 SPEED GEARBOX. )) If you want to look it up we will see if others agree.

You will want to change both bearings in the gearbox to the sealed type. There is a huge range of qualities available in bearings so make sure when comparing prices they are like for like. I am not 100% sure but I think the ZZ is the metal shielded bearing and you would probably be better with the rubber sealed bearing 2RS and flip out the inner seal on each bearing.

From memory I think the 2 bearings cost me about $25 from my local bearing supplier and $7 for the oil seal but sometimes I don't bother replacing the seal because all it does once you fit sealed bearings is help keep dirt and grit out, it doesn't have to keep the oil in

Perhaps not the place to mention that bearings are almost always cheaper from general engineering suppliers than from specific parts suppliers. You do need to get the correct (or better) spec though. Same with oil seals, the vast majority are standard sizes.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll just stick with the kit, at least I'll know I'm getting all the right parts and good quality. After all....it's only money!

i put sealed bearings in my gearbox over two years ago during my diesel conversion i run 20/50 oil in the box and have had no trouble the shields were rubber and they came from my local bearing supplier but you could get them anywhere that sells bearings and these people usually know there onions as we say in the uk happy days paul

Paul I agree out here they seem to know their onions as well,I knock the old bearing out, take it to the bearing shop and I never have a problem
