I hope this doesn't upset the rules but I am looking for either a complete mag/dyno or the distributor housing for a 54 Meteor so that I can have a look at fitting an alternative generator or getting the existing one rebuilt/repaired. Any thoughts?

Norm, check out www.ironhorsespares.co.uk for a new alternator conversion, originally designed for Square 4s but applicable to Meteors. Not cheap but yer Oz Dollar is pretty strong right now!

Thanks Mark,
I have looked at those but last time I looked they were around the 800 quid figure and as the existing dyno is working ok bit hard to justify. I only want something I can have ready to go if needed in a hurry due to a breakdown in the outback somewhere and then it is a bit late to try getting one rewound while you are stuck in an outback pub.

Norm, being stuck in a pub anywhere doesn't sound too bad! I have a spare distributor for mine but no other charging or ignition bits. I'll keep an eye out for you!

Mark,
Just for info, I have set this up as 12 volt using a Paul Goff regulator and it is working well. Still carrying a spare battery , just in case you get caught out at night. So far no problems though and running it with one spring off the distributor has improved performance dramaticly and reduced fuel consumption by a quarter

Hi Mark,
I have been in touch with Iron Horse but they are not sure if it will fit the Meteor, some clearance issue apparently they are waiting for somebody to bring a Meteor to their place to see if it can be fitted. I have asked them for some measurements to see what can be done. Will let you know

Thanks Norm, I'm currently finishing a few jobs on the Interceptor and when that's done I'll have another look at the Meteor but my problem is mainly the poor running after a distributor rebuild so i'll try the spare advance retard springs I have!

Hi Mark,
My Inter is running beautifully now, just got home from a 120ks round trip to night. Starting is still a bit erratic, sometimes first kick, sometimes 10. The Meteor pulls hard and really gets up along the freeways no probs, admittedly out here we stick the 22 tooth sprockets on them straight away, gives a good cruising speed. The info back from Iron Hores is that the alternator conversion is 6mm bigger in diameter, which is only 3mm on the lower side so oil tank clearance won't be a problem. Die grinder would fix any problem in there and then it will be a great machine. Funny how the 54 looks far more vintage than the Inter and they are only 10 years apart.
