Morning all,

When my clutch lever is pulled about half of the leverage is wasted on play in the drive shaft that the clutch sits on, ie the clutch lever has to be pulled at least half way in before the clutch plates start to move apart, please can someone let me know which parts are worn and need changing to rectify this.

It would seem that it could be down to cable adjustment.
There are 3 ways to do this.

1 At the clutch lever, the adj screw.
2 The cable slack adjuster, part way down the clutch cable.
3 Open the smail inspection plate on the side of the gear box and back off the adjuster lock nut. and take up the free play, with a screw driver.
do not forget to hold the screw driver in place while you tigten uo the lock nut.

Thanks for the reply but I understand how to adjust the clutch at the gearbox and at the cable, my question is that there is play on the shaft that extends out of the near side of the gearbox that the clutch and primary chain gears fit to so when the clutch lever is pulled the shaft moves in and out which reduces the amount of effect the plunger has on opening the clutch plates, what I need to know is which parts need replacing to stop the play on the shaft and is it a job I can do myself.

Dumb question, but I'm going to ask it. Have to got the ball bearing that sits between the gearbox rod and the clutch plunger?

Hi guys---------The clutch unit is mounted on the mainshaft so I think "Bertie" is asking what stops the gearbox mainshaft from moving along it's length. ie what bearing or collar locates the mainshaft in its' position within the gearbox?? And the answer is-------------->>>------------------>>>--------------------(Well don't look at me, I'm just as interested to find out as "Bertie" is ).

Not quite surewhat you mean and is it a 4 speed or 5 speed. If 4 speed pull the outer gearbox cover off and see how much of the rod is sticking out of the mainshaft bearing cover. Should be about 3/16th inch.

Hi Bertie,check the nut on the end of mainshaft is tight L/H THREAD.This is located under the oval cover inside the gearbox ouyer cover

Recently tried to check this nut on my own Bullet - without success, as I was unable to remove the cover.
Obviously the nut has to be tight, but how tight a fit is the mainshaft cover in the g/box inner cover?

The clutch is bolted to the mainshaft - the nut that holds it on could be loose (should be a nyloc)
The mainshaft is located at the other end in the mainhaft bearing - the nut could be loose (should be a tab washer here and it's LHT)
The mainshaft bearing could be completely knackered but it would be making a lot of noise.
There could be something completely knackered in the clutch but there again it would be pretty noisy I think.
Easiest to check is the mainshaft nut and bearing (tech notes on kickstart pawl)
If that's OK then you need to strip the clutch (also in tech notes)
Only you know if you can do this yourself but only basic tools are needed
