Engine plate removal

Morning all. On my 2000 Classic 500 the paint on the front engine plates has become chipped and the metal a bit rusty. So I thought I'd give them a bit of a refurbish. Question is if I remove them will the engine need supporting or will it happily 'hang' on the head steady. Obviously I wouldn't run the engine in this state, or even move it. Any thoughts guys? Cheers - Tony.

Axle stand? Bottle jack?

I took mine off without any support but the engine did drop a touch. I had to jack it up ever so slightly to get the bolts back in. Probably best to support it to start with.

Head steady will hold it but better if you take some of the weight with a jack
