Indicator problems

Guys, I’d appreciate advice on the indictor fault on my 1996 500Classic. The bulbs are the 23W ones from our hosts and the flasher unit works fine for a few hours but inevitably it dies giving me no indicators. I know the unit is still taking power when I switch on the flashers because the ammeter flickers. It is not the bulbs blowing but the unit failing –always one side goes before the other (usually the left side first) so I have one side flashing fine but the other does not. Eventually they are both not flashing.
I have tried new flasher units from other 12v bikes, from car suppliers all the way to high end motorbike shops, units tested are rated at 50 watts (two bulbs+idiot lights = ~50 watts) but they all fail within a few hours. Otherwise all lights and electrics look good and bike runs OK (well the electrics do).
What could be the problem?
Cheers, ChrisD
