Connie timing chain adjuster

Hello. Having real problems with reassembling the timing chain on my '59 Connie. It's all about the adjuster quadrant which the manual says is 'wrongly assembled'. Problem is that it's supposed to tighten by moving the quadrant anti-clockwise. I can see what's supposed to go where, but I can't turn the adjuster spindle through 180 degrees to engage the quadrant forks onto the flats on the spindle in the right position because the chain's too tight (the chain and sprockets are already on). I can only see two possible ways to do it:
1. Remove all sprockets, assemble the adjuster then re-fit chain and sprockets
2. Remove the adjuster quadrant stud, assemble the adjuster and refit the stud
Thing is, both of these are tricky for different reasons. The manual says I will damage the quadrant if it tightens the wrong way, but I can't see why. Bottom line: how critical is this?
Thanks
Stephen
