17.8 volts charge at the battery

Hi all - what is the collectives opinion? - as above! I reckon this is a bit high, maybe time for a new regulator (or powerboxfrom pour hosts as the original regulator cum rectifiers are not longer available).

This is with a new fresh correctly commissioned battery showing full resting charge at a shade over 13 volts. At idle the charge rate is approx. 13.8 volts, at fast idle and above the charge rate rises to 17.8 volts - I suspect this is overcharging and what maybe killed the last battery.

Bike is 1993 bullet, neg earth, earlier type combined reg/rec.

Any opinions/help from the electrically gifted?

Kindest

Yes definitely over charging you need between 13.8 and 14.2 volts

Yes I agree. I had one go in a similar fashion. It spiked at about 16v causing the battery to bubble away for some time after use. The power box gives a much smoother output.

OK guys, many thanks. The plunge must be taken.......

As an asides I take it the ammeter can still be used with the powerbox, its just the boyer (and similar) breakerless electronic ignition which reneders it redundant???

If someone is able to confirm that would be great!!

From recent posts it would seem there has been a lot of trade in them recently!
