hi me again trying to find out which is the best oil to use in my 1967 continental gt gearbox, at present using sae 50 but having some problems.

As far as the manuals say you should use a good engine oil. I use Morris Lubricants Classic 20/50 in my 1964 Continental with no problems. Having said that I have changed the 5 speed box to 4 speed because of the old problem of false nuetrals and jumping out of gear. Stems from worn dogs inside the far too thin gears and worn pins on the layshaft. Hope this helps.

The instruction book say's S.A.E.20w/40 as a mid range engine oil, but when I was having problems with gearbox oil leaks etc, I went for a EP80w/90 gearbox oil, with no problems at all, but I dare say some will disagree!

Just for the record, gear oil uses a different range of numbers from engine oil.
So a 20sae engine oil is the same viscosity as a 75 sae gear oil; a 40 sae engine oil is about the same as 80/90 gear oil. Don't ask me why!

Yep, modern gearbox oil is the stuff to use. Don't listen to doom sayers who think it will dissolve your bushes!

Hi Mole, Pleased to hear your on the way up, do not forget to replace the oil seal on the back clutch plates.
