if my alternator isn't charging should I just disconnect it until I can get a replacement part? can I run the bike and just top off the battery charge between rides? I have a power box installed, but it is an electric start

Dean how do you know it isn't charging, do you have a multimeter to check it. Obviously a 4 wire stator, do you have the wires connected the right way, does your headlight run off the battery or does it run only with the motor running

the stator started to smoke from the wires. next thing I've got a dead battery and the ameter gage stays in the negative, even when at higher rpms

wires connected yellow to yellow and orange to orange - that leaves two purples for the other two connections - have tried swithching the purples, but doesn't seem to matter. the headlight only lights up when the bike is running. thanks

If the alternator truly is dead then you can disconnect it and carry on just with the battery. You won't get far if you use the electric start though. Kick starting and not using the lights should get you a few hours riding between charges. Watch out for the indicators, they use quite a bit.

Dean yellow to purlpe, orange to purple joined together run motor up to a couple of thousand rpm and check reading at the battery. Then reverse the orange and yellow on the purples and take another reading and then use whatever combination is the higher. From memory you have a Boyer fitted because you will need it, you will cook the standard Indian rec/reg

Sorry Dean I think you might still be running headlight off the alternator so disregard the above.
