I'm working on a 56 Super Meteor that hasn't been run since 1988 and not stored under the best conditions but it is surprisingly unmolested even if it is a bit rusty. The bike is painted in the brown colour similar to the 54/55 Meteors and the frame is the same colour. I assume this is correct, but does anybody know when they started painting these frames black. If I'm going to paint the frame I want it to be the right colour

Norm, is it the late type frame? As in the all welded one shown in the 1959 Connie (for example,) Parts Book on this site? If so, the frame should be black and my research says Deep Burgundy for cycle parts.

Hi Mark,
It is the late frame but it is obviously a very early 56 one with the valanced guards similar to the 54/55. The brown colour is the same as your 53 Meteor, same as the Ensign and the 54 Meteor we have here so the factory was obviously using this brown colour for some time.

Thanks Simon, I guess you could call it maroon at a stretch when you sand it back. I will run with the colour it is if I can get a match.

Hi Chris,
thanks for that, I'm actually at this moment doing the pumps, fitted the mag and timed it yesterday and tomorrow, fingers crossed tomorrow a mate will come over and give it a kick and hopefully we will have it running. Can't kick it with my gammy leg at the moment. Then I can start looking at the paint side of it, but the weather isn't the best for that at the moment, might have to wait a few months

Hi Chris, I got this one fired up a couple of days ago, third kick and it started, not bad seeing it was last stated in 1988.I picked up the paint yesterday but a bit cold here at the moment mid winter, and the days are only getting up to about 15C

Norm -- " a bit cold here at the moment mid winter, and the days are only getting up to about 15C" -- I'd love to feel some sympathy, but am finding it rather difficult....... here in my part of the UK, MAX. daytime temp. forecast for next Monday is also 15 deg. Monday is, of course, Midsummer's Day. Good luck with the Super Meteor.
