Hi Folks

I have a sixty-5 with boyer Mk4 electronic ignition. If I fitted a Hitchcocks powerbox to replace the regulator/rectifier, would I be able to start the bike without a charged battery ??

I doubt it very much, I'm not sure how they do it on the trials bikes but I know my Inter with Pazon ignition is a no hope of starting with a flat battery. The powerbox doesn't seem to hold enough power, the electronic ignition systems are not too happy with low power, very voltage sensative

Hiya, As i understand it the MK1V is designed to run ok on low battery, earlier ones used to advance the ignition on low power.... pain in the ankle..... Power box is designed to start the bike without battery at all.. always do LeMans start if needed.. Anyway between them should be ok... gwilly

I haven't played with the mark4 but I think they have set it so it doesn't go full advance with low battery to prevent kickback, but as I said electronic ignition and low volts is always going to be a problem. I fitted a new Motorbatt battery to the Meteor with Pazon ignition, battery seems like a dud because it drops back to 11.7 volts and you can't start it, another battery and first kick and it starts.

A lot of the early British coil ignition bikes had an emergency start position on the ignition switch, the bikes where 6 volt alternator bikes and the emergency start position switched the alternator to 12 volt to give enough voltage to start the bike, when running you switch back to normal ignition.



To kick a bike over fast enough to produce enough voltage is possible but would require one hell of a kick.

I have a powerbox plus (I think) Mark 4 Boyer and I have never had much luck with starting with a flat battery. It may be some help on a low battery, hard to say.
And my D7 Bantam never used to start on the emergency position.
