Hi Guys -  I think I need to get the mainshaft out of my 350 Classic as it appears to be bent, causing considerable runout of the clutch, and it sounds as though the bearing's had it as well. Can anyone point me toward a good gearbox stripdown article?

Hi Geoffers - When I did mine I used a combination of articles including the 'Official' Workshop Manual, which is of only limited use as it stops half way through the job! There is a good site showing how the box actually works (which helps when you are stripping it down) at..

Thanks Riggers - I'm feeling more confident already! If there's any cash left after I sort out the mainshaft I might consider the C/R gearset - that huge leap from 3rd to top gear is a bloomin nuisance....

 The main trick in getting the gears back together is to put the mainshaft low gear pinion( gear that goes up against the drive side bearing) in to the back of the box behind the gear operator fingers and then with both gear clusters assembled, slide them in together and feed the mainshaft and then the mainshaft sleve through the gear sittin at the rear of the box, then pull the gears attatched to the gear operator fork towards you and you will then be able to get the gear operator(inside) to come over the pins on the gear operator fork and once this is in place you can lift the grea clusters uo and get the mainshaft sleve into and through the bearing and at the same time get the lay shaft into the rear bush. Do not have a beer during any part of this process

Hi again Geoffers. I made the change to the close ratio gears. Ther're not cheap at £150 plus VAT and delivery, but the difference makes them worth it IMHO.  And because the gears are closer they seem to change better too. I used to be fearful of gearboxes because I didn't understand them but once you've been in there you'll realise that it's all simple stuff. Just make sure you keep everything in the same order it came out and you'll be fine.

You may be lucky and find its just a knackered final drive bearing allowing the shaft to wallow about. Our hosts do a sealed bearing kit £40.00 or rebuild kit, £75.00 includes kicker spring, pawl and ratchet return springs. Page 53 online catalogue on your left screen. whilst ordering bits get Pete Snidells CD part 97002 page 209.   Very well written gearbox strip, helps prevent you taking off bits that can stay in situ. I really hope you're right Gwilly, but I'm not holding my breath!! I'll probably wait 'til I've got my other bike on the road in May before I have a go at it.
