Hey guys and gals.... stop me if you think this is crazy, but I would love to keep my handlebars nice and clean so plan to use a remote master cylinder (ideally located under the petrol tank) and re-use my original Minda cable lever (to operate the master cylinder). Anyone done this at all? Didn't some of the older BMWs have this arrangement? All comments and criticisms welcome!

I think you might need a lever on the master cylinder to get enough advantage. Apart from that I can't see a problem. It would be an interesting little project.

What about a "Cable Operated disk Brake?" I Remember My Kawasaki Having One in a Very Distant Past, I Do not know but I think some Moto Cross Guy's still Buy Them New?...(Bit Crap in there day ,But Perhaps Technology's Changed)....Just a thought ;0)

craig I think you are referring to manually cable operated disk brakes on early jap bikes ?

cable/hydolic have been used on several bikes over the years and were sucsessfull providing the correct ratios were used in relation to levers , both at the h/bars and at the master cyl.

Yes I had a cable operated disc brake on my beloved Z200 ! Needless to say it led me to change the whole front end to one from a GS250 with hydraulics. Cheers for the input gentlemen.

I had a Fantic 303 trials bike that had a cable operate a master cylinder mounted behind the front number plate (between the forks)then hydraulic pipes down to the caliper. Worked well.

I may try with the existing arrangement and cut the lever down slightly (or bend it so it is straighter) and see if this works!

BMW fitted a remote master cylinder to models using ATE front calipers from about 76 to about 1980. It is quite bulky but readily available new or used as are spares for it. Some disc braked Vepas use them and they are smaller, I'm not sure of the models but probably the PX range.
