Engine breaking vs. oil consumption?

Hi good folk,

Is there any relation between engine breaking and excessive (or more than usual) oil consumption? Something to do with increased vacuum? Compression is ok, piston rings replaced 18 months ago, just wondered if this is normal... I do go down through the gears before hitting the brakes quite a lot. Any comments appreciated.

My mistake - I meant engine BRAKING, not breaking.

In a good unworn engine it will make no noticeable difference but if the inlet valve stem/guide is worn oil will be sucked down the gap and burnt in the engine, unless of course you have stem seals fitted. The tell tale here is most noticeable after descending a hill with the throttle closed you will get smoke evident when the throttle is opened again.

Hi guys------ yes PETER, it's good practice to fit an inlet valve stem seal for exactly the reasons that DENNIS C gave... Conversely you don't want one on the exhaust side as this being the hottest part of the engine you need all the lube. / cooling you can get....

Thanks guys, that makes sense. But what's with the links for adverts that have suddenly appeared? If you look at the words 'brakes' and 'course' they are links to some totally unrelated stuff. Is this a way for our hosts to make a bit of extra cash?

It is usually recommended to close the throttle regularly(as they say,`don`t run at a constant speed, vary it up and down.`) when running-in a new or rebuilt engine as this sucks up oil to the top of the cylinder aidng cooling and providing a bit of extra lubrication.

This is weird! I don't have those links at my work computer, only at home... maybe one of the kids has downloaded some weird application that turns certain words into adverts? The same thing on Alan's thread with Sofiaspin's reply - the word 'smoking' is a link to some b******t advert. Cheers for your replies once again.
