Just having a nice ride out yesterday (1993 Bullet classic) when I heard a horrible clattering noise from my primary side. As I took off the cover all sorts of bits fell out along with loads of metal swarf and aluminium dust mixed with oil!
It seems the pin holding the slipper pivot had come out and even the nut on the end was off so the whole lot had all come adrift? Sadly the threads on both ends of the Pivot pin are very poor which make me wonder what the internal thread in the engine is like? The pin has a short thread on one end with a narrow shoulder and a longer one on the other but because its all in bits can someone tell me which thread should go into the engine? I’m guessing the longer one? The shoulder after the shorter thread could be wear from the washer spinning around on it possibly? The manual I have does not show the slipper assembly and its parts in pictures.
Now I’m not confident about putting back the pin due to the damage so has anyone got a spare and are both threads the same cycle thread?
If my thread in the engine is also knackered can I bond the pin in somehow or has anyone else done any mods to the set up before? The slipper was damaged a little and has a bit of rubber where so I’ll try and get a new one of those too me thinks.
Your advice and experience would be welcomed.

( http://www.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/pa ... _Chaincase ) If you copy and paste link to should take you to the Parts book online if not click on parts book left choose your model and year and primary chaincase. you will see a exploded view of parts you need and numbers to order spares.

In the parts book it shows two nuts on the end of the pin and mine had no room for two? My alternator back comes right up to the back of the pin end so its possibly been modified if a bigger alternator closes up the space for a second locknut? (Explains why the nut came off!)The pictures show a similar thread length each end which mine didn't have so maybe a slim locknut or nylock will be needed? I wonder if its 5/16 BSF both ends but guess the thread has gone in the crankcase sadly allowing the pin to come out? I'll ring up our hosts!

Hello GINETTA LAD -------------- Oh POO !! What a way to end the day !!..........The problem with that pivot pin is it's supposed to be fitted tightly into the L/H crankcase ( just like a stud )and then the two lock-nuts at the outer end, along with a washer, clamp and hold the thin-walled bush that the primary-chain adjuster (slipper) turns on..Because of the loading put on that pin by the primary chain adjuster it's vital that the thread in the crankcase is 100% mechanically sound.. Therefore I know this is a pain BUT I really would recommend removing the primary chaincase (inner) to assess the damage done...and as you will have guessed by now this will entail removing the clutch assy. and the alternator stator as well....You may have to heli-coil .....I think the shorter thread goes into the crankcase as there are a pair of locknuts and a washer on the other end..... Wear on the slipper face can be misleading (It's actually just starting to work properly when the rollers are being supported by the friction material, ie}-- the side links are sitting down into those grooves..)...............

Ginetta lad, you do not need many tools to strip the primary. I have not had to use any of those "special tools" ever to remove alternator rotor or clutch.... there are better folks here than me to help you with the technicalities and some are already here :)

I'm just outside Stamford Bridge East Yorkshire. I thought I'd need a special clutch puller to get that off and presumed the rotor would also need a puller?
Fingers crossed the internal thread will grip the new stud ok? Sadly dont have a 5/16 BSF internal tap to tidy the thread and dont know anyone in York where I could buy one? Of course the thread may have been changed prior to my ownership as I found another had! I now have some pictures but havent worked out how to post them yet! From looking at Utube vids it looks like my alternator is a improved one possibly taking up more back space? Parts should come soon hopefully so I'll report back if I need more help. Thanks everyone.
