Hi Morgy------stand-by for a chorus of replies-----altogether lads->>>>>>> SPRAG !!!!  Sorry to sound churlish but you have all the magic ingredients that says it's probally a 90% chance your sprag clutch is jammed.( Im assuming you tested the  starter motor for running when out of the engine ??) Others with actual hands-on experience will be along shortly to guide you through the actual mechanics of the whole affair. Are you / do you know --soneone with mechanical ability. You can save yourself a big wodge of wonga by doing the repairs yourself. What bike is it ?? Best regards-------

Yes I would second that. It sounds like the sprauge clutch has jammed you may be lucky sometimes they just jam as one of the little ratchets bits turn over the wrong way but you will need to take it apart to find out anyway. If you can get by without the electric start you can remove it altogether and all associated parts saving a bit of bother and weight. They sell a blanking plug on this site for such purpose as its a regular thing people do I removed mine from my work Bullet so its kick start only. its not too hard to change but its around £90 for a new sprauge bearing.

 Morgy,

The primary covers have  to come off because it sounds like the bearing has locked up and as the gear to drive the motor is in constant mesh, with the bearing locked up it can end up spinning the shaft in the housing so you need to remove the sprag and either replace the bearing or leave the sprag out completely. Millions of posts worldwide on what to do next.

I think the sprag bearing is possibly ok, it will be the needle roller the gears run on but I haven't seen this bearing for sale anywhere but I'm sure our hosts would have them

Hello again Morgy---------Here's a straight forward question for you to consider as you dismantle the primary etc. Do you really want/need the electric start facility ?? Why not consider using our hosts "Electric start to kick start" conversion kit ??(  Page 42 ) For the same money ---£115 + VaT etc you will have an original  looking Classic 500 PLUS the added wiring, solenoid etc to add say air horns, or flashing spots. And--- you get to keep the heavy duty battery as an added bonus.

ALAN-R  thanks for that but i don't think air horns + flashing spot's will go with the looks of a cafe racer but hey-ho each to there own

Hello morgy ---- OK, but by the same token does an electric "leg" look right on a Cafe' Racer either ??
