Any tips to getting it really tight? I've often thought that a turnbuckle arrangement with left and right hand threads might be a good idea so that it could be tensioned once in place. Maybe Mr H could make them perhaps.

The steady mounting bolts should of course be tight but the adjuster is only to set the correct length for a given bike and should not exert any pressure of tension.
