Hi folks. Im new to this Enfield malarky.Ive bought a 2005 500 classic that im swapping bits on. Ive two questions.. Fitting an after market rear light with two wires. The standerd has three. Which two do i connect, and will the brake light still work? Any tips on starting it while im at it. Cheers

Soley, welcome to Enfield.. not sure if I can help on wiring, but guess the three wires could be 1. earth, 2. Supply for break light, 3. supply for rear light. 


As for starting, I use this method.


Without ignition on, 1. fuel on, 2. kick (priming) six or seven times, some with help of decompressor, 3. switch on ignition, 4. bring piston stroke to TDC ( top dead centre), that's when the Amp meter just flicks back to middle. Now without touching the throttle give it one good kick down. If fails reapeat and see (hope ) if it works for you.

Hello there matey and may I join with Hemant in welcoming you aboard the good ship Enfield.   Wiring--- the BLACK lead is the Earth. One of the "Joys (?)" of keeping an Enfield on the road is discovering all those little foibles that those good guys in the factory in Chennai get up to.   For example }----- I had a look on my 2006 Bullet and found the leads fitted as part of the lamp unit itself had a seperate BLACK (Earth) with a twin-lead containing a GREEN & a GREY----one for stop, one for tail light. But--according to the manual it should be GREEN & AMBER.!!! With your aftermarket assy. the earth function will be through the body of the lamp itself. For the sake of good electrical continuity I suggest you attatch a black lead to your new lamp and connect to the black lead on the bike itself. With the Enfield rear lamp set-up there is a thick rubber grommet insulating the mudguard from the lamp assy. Not nice for electricity trying to get back to the battery.  Hemant---might I add item}--- 3a) Push choke lever down ?? The choke lever is either ON or OFF---- there's no in between setting for when the engine needs to warm up. And Soley---it does take a bit of getting used to. Don't be tempted to just kick & kick & kick 'cos it will back fire on you and give you a "wobbly ankle" for a few mins. How do we know all this ?? Have a guess-----------Didn't quite lift me off the floor but felt like it might have done !!Good luck---stay with the forum for some good laughs, good folk & that Enfield Experience !!

Quite right Alan..... choke when needed.. Today in Bath it's glorious 20C, so left that bit out, and also on my bike.. I only use choke if its really cold..

Ah the old 'how to start an Enfield' question. This thread is going to be a long one as each bike tends to need a different technique..


There are some good videos on Utube, Personally I only need to use the choke while priming on a cold start in the morning and always put it back to normal before actually kick starting it. It mostly starts first time every time cold or hot.


An additional benefit is that by using the same technique as the Bullet, I can start the lawn mower much easier now then I could before!

Thanks for the tips and wellcome folks. I went for a nice ride to sunny Gt Yarmouth today. Sod work i thought,have a nice easy day. Easy bloody day Ate me chips,got back to bike 159 kicks later it fires up. Great.Put gloves on cuts out. People are talking by now. 200 hundred more kicks and a gollon of sweat and im away.. Took the ZXr out in the end.. I do love riding the Bullet tho!

Welcome to Royal Enfield ownership.  There is a definate knack to starting the bike.  It's been discussed a few times.  I may live not that far from you (Norwich) if you want some assistance.

Hi Soley and welcome. I'm newish on here too, but there seems to be a really nice bunch of people on here willing to sort out almost anything. Just a shame they seem to be scattered all over the globe making a general meet impossible.
