Anybody know what will remove this from gearboxes. I use kero and a paint brush but it still is a pain to get out. Rebuilding my third box since yesterday and I'm a bit sick of it

Yes, kerosene or petrol with a stiff-bristle cleaning brush is what I always use. There was a special cleaning assembly where I used to work, a tray on top of a 50 litre? drum with a pump which pumped a cleaning fluid into the tray, then drained it down to the drum again as I cleaned the parts with the brush. This was changed every couple of months by the firm from which it was hired.

Norm, I've not had to do a gearbox but recently had to get a lot of grease out of a hub. I put it over a container and heated it with a hot air gun (paint stripper) and most of it just dripped out, then into the parts washer.

Mark, Leon,
Grease is easy, 00 is out of this world. Hopefully I won't have to do any more for a while . Kero eventually gets it out but you really have to work at it

Strange isn`t it, people will say not to use 00 grease because it doesn`t stick to anything. Yer can`t help laughing cos it makes yer laff.

I still use it in the old Bullet because otherwise it leaks everywhere. The Indian one though I've changed for straight 50. The old 00 ive found seems to form clumps around the drain holes but a fair amount of it is in quite a liquid state so you clear the drain hole with a stick a fair bit pours out. Replace this with engine oil and give it a few miles and re drain and Bobs your uncle.

Best for this semi-fluid is heat to make it move, very resistant to solvents.

Ended up being 4 gearboxes in the end, but hopefully that will be the end of them for at least the next 12 months
