Hi all, Having balancing trouble with the front wheel, suspect the rim might be out of true, local bike shop wants about £50 quid to fix it.
What's the score for having a go yourself.
Any help tips advice etc most welcome.

£50 sounds ok to me if they have to remove the front wheel,tyre,innertube,spoke rubber sleave and check/adjust with all the gauges they have.

hi howzie,its just a matter of adjusting the spokes it helps if you have a jig to put the wheel in i.e an old swinging arm i.m currently making 1 as my wheels need truing up and its not a black art worth £50 i,m sure you could get info off the web atb paul.

The bullet front wheel is an easy job as it comes off complete with spindle. I did mine on a pair of axle stands and used a fixed post with a masonary nail as a pointer. If you clean the rim and polish the nail head to a mirror finish , any out of trueness in the rim will look double because of the reflection between rim and nailhead.

Hi guys---------- HOWZIE, I do all the needed balancing, adjustments etc. myself (but not a build-up from scratch), using items bought from E-bay....As per GRUNDA I'm using an old Bullet swing arm with some home-made mounting plates to suit......(As an estimating guide take one spoke and one nipple at £1 each....ie £2 per hole in the rim) PLUS labour and VAT if applicable....Commercial Labour Rates for Motorcycles are £50per hour -- or more --- so that £50 quote sounds about par for the course for a bit of truing-up, IF that is the real problem ?? .. Hi guys-------- ZIPPY, may I add a slight improvement to your set-up ?? Find a pair of clean, lightly oiled roller bearings where their hole diameter is slightly larger than the spindle's outside diameter ie they are a "sloppy " fit...Placed in the Vee of the stands ( I have some upturned angle - Iron, but the effect is the same) you'll find that sensitivity is much improved as the wheels own bearings and seals are no longer in play....A slight spray with WD40 each time does the trick......

I'm with you all the way to WD40 ,. I wont have it in the workshop, It is the micturition of Beelzebub. It is a paint killer and it gets everywhere. It is also a water repellant and not a lubricant.
