Rotor Taper Question.

I’ve just changed my gearbox sprocket and got the primary chaincase cover ready to put back on and fill with oil, but looking through the back postings on this site I found this post from Jordan Mix on 18 Feb 2008 ,

I disassembled my primary chain case/alternator last night. When i started to get things together to do the reassembly i came upon a problem. The alternator rotor does not have a distinguishing front or back. Does it matter which way you put this on the shaft? If so how do you tell, both ends look exactly the same to me

Answer from Ric Subject: Re: Rotor question

I think the rotor should have a slight taper so it will only fully bed home when fitted correctly

With this answer from Ric, Is this true? Has the rotor got a taper to it?

Years ago I seem to remember we only fitted Woodruff keys to taper shafts.

So will I have to take rotor off again to check it?

Remember Freddy you need to air gap the stator before you tighten it up

Thanks Alan and norm, all air gapped, minimum gap on one coil of 7 thou, and 13 thou max on one of the others. Turned engine over and these gaps seem pretty constant. I assume this is OK ,

By the way Norm, temperatures here in the Cotswolds are around 30 degrees, same as Oz, pity its Fahrenheit and snowing. ,

Freddy as long as you have a gap on every coil, doesn't matter how much as long as there is a gap on every coil. 37c again today 9 days in a row this time

Alan,
We took the Chang out for a run yesterday after fitting a new crank, was too hot for the gearbox and it locked up for some reason. Once it cooled down it was fine again. Might have to just ride it at night when the temp drops to about 25c
