Hi
I have just brought a 2006 500 electra x fitted with a dellorto phf32dd (r4695) carb has part of the highway kit.Can any one tell me where the mixture and idle screws are can see one with a spring under it on the right hand side (viewed when seated) all the other screws seam to be blanking screws.Also is the amal carb better than the dellorto has i might change to the amal.

hi spro,i think that the screw with the spring is the tickover screw ,1 of the others you mention will poss be a mixture screw it will be possibly made of a brass coloured material ,turn the screw in half a turn and if the revs raise it is the t/o screw ,i know that stu has a delorto so he may come along and assit later,i have the amal concentric on my Hellectra it works very well up to present atb paul.

Hi! Yep Spro the largest screw with the spring, on the right hand side of the carb, (timing side of the engine) is the idle adjustment screw.
At just past 3 o'clock to the idle screw is the pilot air mixture screw, which should be brass. Adjusting it is the opposite to Mikuni/Micarb instruments, which caught me out at first. As the mixture screw is nearer to the inlet manifold, from the centreline of the carburettor, you have to screw in INWARDS to WEAKEN the mixture and screw it OUTWARDS to RICHEN the mixture!
I have never owned an Amal carb but I hear on forums about how they leak, wear and need constant adjustment. Perhaps this isn't exactly true of all Amals but I could never live with tickling fuel all over my clean bike! On my Electra the Del'Orto throttle pump carb has been one of the most reliable componants, and only needed adjustment after I changed the exhaust header for our host unrestricted version (very highly recommended by the way). It was developed by Watsonian for the Electra along with the cut-down airbox and K&N filter and has been very reliable and gives very good performance.
Personally I'd never swap it for an Amal Spro.

Back in 2006 having fitted my highway kit some adjustments were required with Dell'Orto - bigger main and idle jet needle was also raised. Idle (air) screw only half turn out. But plain sailing till the end of last season when draining I noticed the other float halve had developed a leak from its seam and was half full with petrol.
