Bonding on brass tank badges

I'm refurbishing an old petrol tank. I've painted it black- primer + several coats of black+ lacquer. I want to fit a couple of brass tank badges that I have had for some time. Trouble is, the tank doesn't have screw holes, so I will have to bond them on using Araldite probably supplemented with some double sided foam tape. The contact patch between the badges and the tank is relatively small however I bend them, and I am worried about getting a firm enough bond. Will it be OK to stick them on the painted surface, or should I sand off some of the paint to get to bare metal?
Has anyone else any experience of this type of job?

Hi John, Quite simple, I would cover the badges with number plate double sided sticky pads. ( available at Halfords) Then I would trim them off around the badge, and then fix to where you want them. Bingo job done. no doubt some one will have a better idea

If they don't fit well you need a gap filling adhesive.
Sikaflex marine sealant will do the job. In fact you'd struggle to get them off.
Just tape them in position while it sets.
Carbond will also do the job and you can get it in black. It sets to a hard rubber-like substance
Either of these will stick to the paint well, just make sure to degrease before.

Thanks to both of you. The number plate tape was along the lines i was thinking, but the marine sealant may be the one I go for. No Halfords here on Guernsey, but you might not be surprised that yacht chandlers and marine suppliers are more in evidence!

Selleys No more Nails worked brilliantly for the Ducati badges but I'm buggered if I know how I'm going to get them off when it's time for a repaint.
