Thought i would try and find out why the ammeter and tachometer (on and off)would not work, who said enfields are easy to work on? Headlight on the front mudguard (towel inbetween really)and found 8 cockpit lights all 12v 2w.I`m thinking, save on a x-mas tree bring the bike inside, said the missis!

Sadly, even I can't help you on this one. I've never managed to find a wiring diagram for a Lightning. Even the diagram for a Thunderbird isn't much help.

That`s ok BarryQ, I`ve noted the wiring colours on the tacho block connector,I`ve checked the ammeter and all appears complete but the pointer was locked to the right.I`ve straightened it and checked it on the positive side of my battery charger charging the battery on the bench, even reversing connection on ammeter posts showing a negative charge. If vibration caused this i`m not bothered because a voltmeter would be the answer. Also small tacho`s can be fitted as well.Just ordered 10 quality new bulbs (BA9s) because one not working and 3 fell apart.

Don't panic. My ammeter isn't all that great. Cruising at a constant speed, it's great. Anything else. it's called 'Mr Wiggley'. It is possible to turn it from an ammeter to a voltmeter, but without a wiring diagram, I couldn't tell you how. It looks like you Lightning was a 'Friday afternoon special' (Like mine). My problems were mechanical. Your problems seem to be electrical.

Ammeter/voltmeter,Ammeter or Ampmeter is connected in series for battery charging, voltmeter 2 wires (cheap to buy) connected to live (when switched on) and negative (earth).Digital reading should show 12.4v when switched on (neutral light only) and a round 11.9v when cranking just before T.D.C. (points opening).
