Is the fork cover bush needed after removing the fork covers?

So, I've fitted gaiters and have removed the fork covers. In doing so I also removed the plastic fork cover bushes. It's now occurred to me that maybe they do need to be in there to support the fork? It seems fine without but I don't want it to slowly put excessive strain on the threads of the fork tops or something. Does anyone know if they should still be in there? You can see in this picture how I have no fork covers at all, not even the short ones so my forks are exposed above the bottom yoke. I am happy with this but only if it's OK from a engineering perspective. Like I said, it's been working fine (green laning) but it just occurred to me to check.

Thanks

No Matt, they are not structural. The gap above the bottom yoke looks a bit odd to me but......

Thanks Pete. that's good to know. TI understand what you mean, but the short fork covers are a tenner each so I was thinking about cutting down the long ones that I have removed but these gaiters don't have wide tops big enough to fit over the short fork covers so the cut edge would be exposed. I'm happy with it as it is.

Hello MATT---------Hang on !!! no need to spend any money AND we can fill in that gap AND keep those gaiters that you have fitted at the moment..... HOW ??? Read on dear friend ===>=====>=====>===== OK, first photo shows your type of gaiter, viewed from the top, with a cut made at the first "bend" like so-----------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEXT}------- cut your existing tubes as per this photo }------------------------------------------------------------------
http://i1174.photobucket.com/albums/r61 ... LD2800.jpg -------------- then you can stretch and fit like this ----------------------------------------

-----------------Finish off with a jubilee clip for looks...... Apologies if this has come out lees than perfect !!!

----------I've got the LES H "additional" bug, it seems LoL !!!--------- with all that Photobucket parlava I forgot to mention that I've used a full-length silver tube just to illustrate that the modified gaiter can be fitted. To fill in that open gap that you currently have you will need to cut your existing tubes using the dimension as illustrated.....then re-fit them on the bike .....then stretch and fit the gaiter. PHEW !! I'm not computer savvy and this has stretched my nerves !! You might be asking by now "How does he know this"???....... Guess-who bought one pair of each type??........... luckily I have two classic 500's so this pair will go onto No.2 Bullet as described----next Spring.
