Strobe timing a 612, what have people found best 28 degrees before TDC? I think I have seen mention somewhere of 32 degrees

Hi Norm,
I am interested in this myself, since I am in the process of tuning out the small amount of pinging that remains on my 612. Advice I had from Wayne at Hitchcoks was: (his quote) "Timing – depending on which ignition you run we recommend 30 degrees BTDC at full advance – standard is 32 degrees and you can go to 28 if you need to". Also, Andy C said he set his to 27 degrees, then "adjusted by ear". I originally set mine to 29 degrees by timing disc, but since then had to change my points which altered it all. So I am now making fine adjustments by "ping timing". A rough static check (straw down the plughole at TDC) suggests my points are breaking at about 2 or 3 degrees BTDC, which when added to the 22 degrees (if accurate!) of the auto-advance, I'm probably around the 25 degree mark advanced. This maybe a bit on the late side for good power making, but she's running well and doesn't seem to be getting hot. I am experimenting with a richer needle jet (107) at the moment and might also try a spot of Castrol Valvemaster Plus (for an octane boost) as used by Andy C. This might enable me to add some more advance. It would be useful if other 612'ers will chip in with their ignition settings!

Norm / Barry.
Indeed I set mine to around the 27 degree mark using a degree disc and as Barry said carried out the fine adjustment by ear.
I swear that it ran much better with non supermarket fuel and Valvemaster plus.
Sadly all in the past now as I sold her back in March this year to make way for another project.
Do I miss her..........do bears......is the pope..........you know the answer !!
Happy memories

Thanks Barry and Andy hope to hear from a few others so we can get a bit of a data base on them. I fitted a 32 Delorto to this one and that appears to be working well
