Rear wheel spindle

Afternoon all, As the Goldie exhaust I have on Bertie is slightly swept up, to remove the rear wheel spindle the exhaust has to come off as the spindle won't pull past it, if I turn the spindle around so it drawers out onto the near side instead of the offside ( the crown nut would now be on the offside ) could there be any adverse effects, or is anything now dangerous ?

Cheers in advance.

Bertie, I believe it is reversable but I have never tried it.

As the spindle is not stepped and the crown nut only locks on to the spnidle I can't see any reason why it won't reverse. I suppose there might be a case that it should be a left hand thread if it is reversed but I can't see that it would matter if it's torqued up properly.

If you reverse it then there is a very remote chance that the spindle could be rotated by the wheel and thus become loosened.....it is a remote risk IMHO. However you need only Loctite the nut or fit security wire or an R clip or similar to totally eliminate the risk altogether. HTH.

Thanks for the replies gents, the crown nut has split pin to hold it so it shouldn't come undone, cheers..

Trouble with split pins is that we tend to re-use them when strictly speaking they should be replaced every time. I good solid "R" clip is better. They last forever and are stronger.

Hi Bertie,
No problem in reversing spindle. I did same on the Indian 'Indian' to clear special pipe. Some later bikes have the spindle fitted the other way round from new)
Hope to see you at the next meeting - did you go to Ofham steam rally at weekend?

Cheers Mickey, no didn't make Ofham, entertained family for dinner instead, surprised it went ahead with the constant rain all day, Bertie's of the road for now, think he might need a new chain, snail cams are almost on full adjust already and it's looking a bit saggy, see you at club night (hopefully)..
