The manual specifies using "washing solvent" to clean the clutch plates. What would washing solvent be in the US?

Brake cleaning fluid should do the job, possibly neat petrol - sorry, gasoline!

Brake and clutch cleaner is normally the same stuff, in a spray can.

I genertally use paraffin (kerosene) or A spray of WD40 and a wipe with a rag.
If the steel plates look glazed, I deglaze them on a bit of wet wet and dry paper stuck to a flat surface (piece of glass) with water using a side to side movement then thoroughly clean off any residue with the afore-mentioned WD40 and cloth.

Thanks for the translation, we have all the suggested supplies. We found the clutch spring screws to be loose and 2 of the lock washers cracked but fortunately hadn't shed pieces yet. This is the last thing to address to allow test riding the new Mikuni carb upgrade you guys helped us with last fall.
