I am swapping out the MIL light cluster for an ammeter on my 2018 C5. I have relocated the three warning lights into the headset but now am really struggling to push fir the ammeter into the hole with a new rubber seal.

The light cluster did not want to come out and only came out with persuasion from underneath with a drift and hammer and was pretty battered afterwards.

The new ammeter has gone in a few mm but doesn't want to go any further and now also wont pull out! I need to push it in by at least another 10 to 12mm. I have placed the seal in first and then lubricated between the seal and ammeter with a smear of oil. There was no way i could even get the ammeter into the hole with the seal around it.

Any tips anyone?

I used liberally applied hairspray on the inside of the rubber when I fitted the one on my bullet... But you've already got it stuck now.

I use the same thing to fit handlebar grips. It's pretty slippy when it's wet but dries sticky so it wont come off again.

Hair spray is great for grips but for things like the ammeter into rubber I would use silicon grease

I think i will make a press using a G clamp and some cut to size pieces of wood and lots of foam to protect the ammeter face! the problem is that there is little underneath to press against unless i can notch some wood to span the headset.

Some silicone spray may help in removal and refitment of the stuck ammeter
The problem with oils and greases is they can cause rubber to swell and go sticky

Good luck with it Dai

The G clamp and wood press worked and the ammeter is in the hold very snugly.

I now need to work out how to wire it into the main loom

Now that I can't help you with not on a bike with stock wiring

The way I do it is put the ammeter between the battery positive and ignition switch

Hopefully someone will have the answer for you

Good luck Dai

Yep, oil will make things worse as it will swell the rubber.
Silicon spray or grease would have been better.
You would be better off removing it first and replace the rubber seal.

The wiring is all done and i removed the seat and tank to trace it back to cable tie down the frame. The Ammeter works.

But i have a big unrelated problem now, when removing the fuel tank and taking off the fuel line to the fuel pump the plastic fuel outlet pipe snapped off
