Shouldered nuts

Hi all.

I’m currently rebuilding a “basket case” 1962 Crusader 250 and finally starting the reassembly.

I’ve replaced some of the fixings with the correct ones from our hosts and, in some instances, these are “shouldered” nuts. E.g. https://accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycl ... ages%2F207

Can anyone advise me which way the “shoulder” should face? I.e. against the thing being clamped or outwards?

They use similar ones on the back of the handlebar retaining clip on bullets and the plain section goes against the clip it's holding. If you try to fit them the other way, there isn't enough clearance to tighten the hex all the way without fouling the clip with the "points".

They also use them on bullet rear subframe top nuts where the shoulder engages into a recess in the bracket. Again, shoulder facing the piece.

I'd imagine the "shoulder" will turn out to be the exact diameter of the steel tube up the centre of the fork bushing so it's only tightening against the tube and not the rubber.

Hi, in the case of the 250 engine the two shouldered nuts that attach the front of the primary cover are fitted with the plain side outward, all other applications plain inward. Vince
