Chain ware and care?

As I mentioned in a recent post I did about 2,000km last week over in England. Before I left I made sure that the chain had the correct play in it. After the 2k it's as loose as a very very loose thing. Having thought about it I'd adjusting the rear wheel to set the tension far far more then I used to. It's a fresh chain, well maybe 6 months. Maybe it's a lubrication issue on my part and I should be carrying a can of spray or maybe it's something else? Should I be pulling the two sprockets off and replacing them? Do they wear and cause problems with a chain? Any advice very gratefully received.
