When the tank is anywhere near full the sender float rattles against the tank top/side. Is there a setting up process or is just a case of bending and hoping to keep some degree of accuracy.

Forget this one. The "Dealer" had removed it so I could take the tank for cleaning before purchasing the bike. He refitted it incorrectly which I've now corrected.
