What are the tapped holes round a crusader brake plate for?

There is a series of 5 small, tapped holes round the edge of a crusader alloy brake plate. I was wondering what they are for?

Ah, nice. An invention you don't see enough of. I had one on my Jawa, checking the chain was something you did as often as changing the rear tyre, maybe even less often.
