Why do you need to take the engine out to just to take the cylinder head and barrel off?

Oil is either going to be getting past the piston rings or down the valve guides if too much is being used. Is it being burnt as white smoke, or is it being chucked out of the engine breather?

The piston rings might not have been run-in properly, or fitted upside-down. Occasionally oil scraper rings are just poor quality.

If the oil is getting past the valve guides, do you have valve stem seals fitted? Try fitting breathers to the rocker-boxes, or possibly one of our hosts' pressure relief valves for the oil feed to the rockers.
