Thanks for the sensible replies and as for the rest I can assure you that I am not a selfish, non law abiding, agressive hooligan on the road as you imply; I leave all that to 4x4 and German car drivers who fill that category extreemly well! I have survived riding for getting on for 60 years and during that time, hopefully, I have learnt how to ride defensively, with courtesy, safely and within the current laws of the land.
My Street Twin has a lovely inoffensive exhaust tone (yes it does have V&H fitted) and actually sounds (legally) like a real motorbike; unlike the Enfield which sounds more like a 50cc phut phut. I also realise my Triumph is a twin and almost double the engine size of the Enfield but all I want to do is to try and achieve near to the quality of sound for the Enfield.

Thanks in advance for any more sensible replies.

I had a silencer as supplied by the forum host with the removable/modifiable baffle and it was perfectly acceptable, louder without being harsh, and about a quarter of the weight.

Hello,

I am a firm beliver in "loud bikes save lives" and I have a 2020 Bullet 500 Trials which sounds more like a moped than a 500 single. So does anyone know how I can modify the existing standard silencer to make a bit more noise or, failing that, where I can get another louder silencer that fits well, looks good, makes a bit more noise, is legal and doesn't cost the earth. Yes I know our host sells a "goldie" silencer that would probably fit the bill in all respects but they are not available at present.

Thanks
Try Feked Classic bike spares, they used my 500 efi (2008) as the test bike to make their first modern RE silencer and now do them for the later models as well. All made on site (about 5 miles from me) here in the UK, reasonable price, good quality and they sound a little bit 'meatier' but definitely not loud. You could knock a larger hole through the centre baffles with a something like a piece of rebar if you want a bit more noise.

I agree the modern bikes are over-silenced, but my experience with out hosts' Goldie loudener was that it was TOO loud, even with the baffle fitted I was getting fed up with it fairly quickly.

One of the problems was, I think, that our hosts did not try and replicate the original BSA baffle design and just made it a straight-through job. :( If somebody can't wait for them to re-stock, maybe try a BSA/Goldstar specialist?

From my own experience, the Indian "short bottle" silencer with a 1950's level of baffle fitting seems to give a decent exhaust note without being excessively loud.

I changed my standard silencer to our hosts goldie on my 2019 c5 for 2 reasons 1, i didn't like the look of the original huge thing and 2, the weight of said silencer, I first thought I had made an error as it was a harsher sound but that has mellowed over the last 4000 miles, if I were to need to change it I would either go for the same again or a 50's bottle style, IMO its a little louder but not loud enough to be unsociable or annoying to others, I have ridden in groups and friends following me tell me that its not too loud and they are quick to express their opinion!, I have followed others with modern systems which have been far more unsociable,
this is just my own experience if it helps.............
as for being attractive to the police, the only time I was pulled on the c5 was because the officer was keen on retro bikes and wanted to look at it!

John,

No offense taken thank you - perhaps I should have used the word sweeter rather than louder?

Some of this reminds me of something that happened years ago on my Honda CB500T, which had a healthy snarl from the Goldie shaped [but bigger and uglier] silencers, whose baffles had long gone, with a little assistance. I pulled into a filling station for fuel and there was a 'jam sandwich' at the pump opposite. One of the cops came over and remarked that my bike sounded rather loud, but good compared to his CB500, which sounded more like a sewing machine and how could that be? I suggested his was probably a four cylinder model and mine was a much rarer twin, which he accepted happily and complemented me on the bike. True story.

Hello,

The noise is behind you, not in front so how do you figure that out?
Only if you're breaking the sound barrier which is unlikely on an Enfield :D :D
