Hi people,

First time posting on here so please go gentle with me.... Basically my problems are these:

I bought a new Electra EFI in 2009 and had a problem so it went back to the dealer, I was told the issue was sorted. I have since bought a new battery and installed a trickle charger to stop my battery dying (again!) and the bike now starts fine. The trouble is, if I try to turn any of the electics on - lights, indicators etc the engine cuts out straight away. When I try to drive it the bike will stall a number of times within 10 minutes, not only when I use lights but randomly when not revving the engine.

The thing is, is that after 10 or so minutes all these problems seem to go away, I can use the indicators without it cutting out - although today after a 20 minute ride (everything was going fine) the engine stalled when I flashed my main light.

I'm not too technically minded but have some friends that are happy to help tinker so any ideas would be very welcome.

TIA

Steve.

P.S - someone said something similar happened to them and was caused by wax in the fuel tank. Is this a possibility?

 Steve,

Wild stab here but one thing that should be done with all new Enfields. Go through the wiring harness, disconect every connector, inspect and reconect, seems to be an ongoing problem with Indian electrics. Might not solve your problem but at least it is a start

Thanks Norm, will give that a try tomorrow hopefully, should the missus permit!!

Any ideas why things get better when the engine warms up though? I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up taking it to the local garage but thought I would ask on here first.

 Steve,

Still a long shot, but I think as the components warm up, possibly due to a little arcing through the connectors they expand and therefore make better contacts. I'm not sure if they may spray something onto the connectors in India to help protect them from humidity, but it seems once the connectors have been pulled apart and refitted the problems seem to go away apart from the normal age issues suffered with all bike wiring systems

Hi Steve, Norms right, I had a similar problem on mine which i bought new last year, when you turned the handlebars to the left the lights would go out, it turned out to be a loose connecter.

Thanks for the info Phil,

I was just wondering... Have either of you heard about a 'self diagnostic lead' that is under the seat? I read somewhere that these leads are attached to the EFI 'brain' and when touched to the frame of the bike produce a series of flashes on the engine light linking to error codes somewhere in a shop manual.

I'm thinking of trying to get the seat off to see if this model has one but I've never taken it off before so wouldn't bother if someone else knows different...

Reproduced courtesy of EnfieldMotorcycles.com:

"In order for the self diagnostic system to be of any use it must first be deployed. The procedure for that is to find the "test pin" wire and ground it out. This wire is just a short piece of wire from the ECU with a female plug on the end. You can put an alligator clip on it and then ground it. When that is done the MIL will start blinking in code to tell you what has failed. I thought the codes were published in the owners manual but I COULD VERY WELL BE MISTAKEN and I do not have one in front of me. I have posted the codes below however."

"You can ground the lead in the right tool box and read the codes by how many times the lights blink when you turn the ignition on."

"On the G5 it's under the seat. Right on the connector that plugs into the ECU.

Here's the codes,

MIL BLINK CONTENT

Engine will start but not perform to its potential. MIL will glow continuous

LONG 0 SHORT 6 Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) circuit malfunctioning

LONG 0 SHORT 9 Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) circuit malfunctioning

LONG 1 SHORT 1 Engine oil Temperature (TE) circuit malfunctioning

LONG 1 SHORT 7 O2 Sensor circuit malfunctioning

LONG 4 SHORT 5 O2 Sensor heater circuit malfunctioning

Engine will NOT Start but will crank. MIL will glow continuous

LONG 1 SHORT 5 Rollover Sensor circuit malfunctioning

LONG 3 SHORT 3 Injector circuit malfunctioning

LONG 3 SHORT 7 Ignition Coil circuit malfunctioning

LONG 4 SHORT 1 Fuel Pump circuit malfunctioning

LONG 6 SHORT 6 Crankshaft position circuit malfunctioning

Testing Procedure using the Test pin in the vehicle."

Hope this is of some use to you!

Hi everybody -----------  How long is the warranty on these new Enfields ?? The concept of EFi, Electronic ignition, Self-Diagnostic connections etc is not new to the automotive industry in general and has been with us for some time. This is now purely a matter of quality control (Design through to build) at Enfield. I, like the rest of us, enjoy tinkering and solving a technical problem......but not on a new machine ( ie whilst still under warrenty) , for heavens sake !!  To-days Bullet is a modern product sold in a very competative, customer-driven and  quality-orientated WORLD market place. I hope somebody, somewhere is feeding all this back to Chennai ?? And whilst in the "Hard-done by Brit. mode"--------Has any improvements been made to the spragg clutch design------ has anyone had an EFi primary chaincase off and seen the present set-up ????  OK, that's my "rant-4-2day" out of the way.

Hi all,

Right... having checked as many connections as possible I have found no problems there. However, after removing the ignition switch and opening it up a couple of connections inside are covered in white 'crap' and don't look too good at all. Could this be contributing to the problem?

Also, I have found the diagnostic lead and on the end is a connecting block with 3 wires going into it - a red and white one, a grey one and a black one. Does anyone know which block of the connector blocks I should be trying to short onto the frame?

Thanks for all the help...
