Why the big jump?

There's been a lot spoken on here recently about the 'big jump' on the four speed Enfield gearbox (Albion) from third to top. But does anyone know WHY the ratios were originally made this way? I can't think of any good reason why such a massive jump was thought to be OK.

A very interesting question, Riggers. I don't know the answer, but I look forward to reading some informed opinions on the subject.

------there's some talk of it being related to trials work etc. Wasn't this posted recently or contained within a thread, maybe??----What's the internal ratios for a Redditch machine then ??

All trials bikes used 1st 2nd and 3rd in sections and to get to the next section on the road 4th was used this why the Indian army used the 350 bullet for the mountain area where there was a lot of trouble at the time

I feel like I might be riding a different machine here. I am very happy with the ratios on the 350. The old 51 is fine and the Indian motored one is a slightly higher geared but as it has exta tit it's excellent. I can get 50 mph in third without any major stress and that makes it a useful cog. The change to top is fine and the only issue is running out of courage at 70mph.

the big jump i once had one but thats another story what i can tell you is that i had a bsa c15 250 cc bike it also had a wide jump ,i think that it is so you can thrap the bits off the engine before engaging top gear just to make it interesting or if like me just stickit in top at 30 mph and chug fart and pop around the 50 mark it keeps me grinning thats why i like the diesel jobby it gives you a daft grin every 450mile when it needs its fuel replenishing NICE!

I believe that they raised the standard gearing slightly in 56 or 55 but there is no question that the bitsa is higher geared than the 51. I ride them both often enough to pick the difference. obviously this is something that can be easily altered with a sprocket change but they are both pretty much perfect for their bhp.
