Classic 350 iron barrel timing shims

My exhaust and inlet timing cams have two shims each , should there be one each side of the cams or both between timing cover and cams ?

Both on the outside but i can't see that it would matter.

Thanks for reply , that was my thinking just making sure it didnt act like a thrust washer.

AFAIK they just take up the end play.
Just be careful what gasket you use; there are some thin ones about that will allow the cover to jam the cams regardless of the shims.
