I've just looked at the inner cable and the top squared section [fitting into the speedo is 22 mm long.
the end of it appears to be a bit rough.
could the cable have snapped off in the speedo?
has anyone the correct length of the inner squared section?
this is driving me crazy.

Hi, when you say the rear drive is working ok, do you mean its turning? Connect the cable to the drive and rotate the wheel while holding the square protruding at the top in you fingers. Chances are the drive has worn and while turning will not operate under the load of cable and speedo. Vince

cheers Vince
the rear drive is ok and the inner cable is driven when removed from the outer, it looks as though the square section that goes into the speedo has a sheared top face with on lt 22 mm of squared section left, I am hoping that if I remove the speedo and retrieve the broken off section I can restore a working speedo[new cable of course]

Speedo cables can be a bit particular when it comes to how they sit. Have you tried fitting it in the order of “top first, bottom last”, making sure that the screw on cap goes all the way up?
If you do it the other way round, the top drive section might not engage correctly because it’s not high enough.
