Kitchen cupboard door hinge adjuster is, indeed, the answer. Checked it against one in... the kitchen.
So I can now stop worrying that it's a vital brake part I didn't recognise.

So how did it get from the kitchen to the garage floor? Unless you stood on it in the kitchen where it became lodged in the tread of your trainer/slipper and you went to pet your bike in the garage where the item dislodged when you crouched down to hug the engine??

Mmmmm…. well I did, as you say, spend a while hugging the engine. Obviously.
The strange thing is, there are none missing in the kitchen. Perhaps they are breeding.
I'll let you all know immediately if we start to get over-run by the little devils.
