My 2005 350 Bullet has a screw in dip stick. Should I measure the level of the oil with the dip stick screwed in, or just resting on the crankcase? I have just changed the oil, not including the filter compartment, after draining it from all 3 drain holes and the valve tappet chest. After adding 2 litres of fresh oil, the level is above the max if the dip stick is screwed in, but the level is OK with it unscrewed. Since I have only added 2 litres of oil and the capacity, I believe, is 2.5 litres would the “missing” oil be what is left in the filter housing?

I believe that the amount of oil stated in the book is for a dry engine not for a oil change

The extra oil is just sitting around the engine

With the Bullet lubrication system I would advise you to change the filter with every oil change

Take care not to overfill

Screwed in, bike level and cool.

Easy enough to drain a wee bit out using the back drain screw. However a fair bit can disappear into the timing chest adfter a refill so probably worth running it at idle for a minute then letting it sit for 5 and re-checking the level.

I have only done 370 miles since the last oil change. Bike has been off the road for a year while I did some useful mods, so didn’t think changing the filter was necessary.

Must have done it wrong all these years. Not screwed in IMHO.

I removed the oil separator can under the seat and directed the oil reservoir breather to the lower run of the rear chain. Since doing that the oil level seems to settle just over half way up the dipstick when it’s screwed in. If I put much more oil in it just lubricates the chain and the back wheel rim.

The way I read it, it's screwed in. 350 bullet owners manual. Screw-in type filler cap.

Yeah, OK the book says screwed in.
But then, I don't believe most of what I read in books
In any case, the 1 cm or so is not going to be significant. You never want to have these filled to the top mark and as long as something shows on the stick you're good to go. There's plenty of oil under the bottom of the dipstick.

Yes, lots. Most of it in fact. As you can see from this picture of the split crankcases with the dipstick in situ. Where it doesn't want to be is above the return hole from the timing chest (top left of oil tank).
