Silencer for 350 iron.

My torpedo silencer is fine, but I have to remove it when I put my bike on my trailer as it sticks out beyond rear tyre and hits tailboard. Simple answer would be something a bit shorter; mega looks compact and is the most economic, but will I find it too loud for normal road use? Looking at pictures it seems the reverse cone comes off, so is it easy enough to pack it or fit extra baffle if it proves noisy?
My exhaust downpipe has a 45mm collar on it, so would any short absorption type box be okay, I wonder....what do you use?

Hi P
I have a upswept tulip megaphone with baffel fitted on asbo 30, it's a lot quieter than my Harley but loud compared to a long cigar type
Have a look on YouTube for asbo30 and other videos from performance classics to get a idea
You will have to rejet but You probably will no matter what you fit
Hope this helps Dai

The mega has a fibre-wrapped mesh baffle in it. Admittedly my 612 blew all the wadding out within 100 miles but a 350 would probably be ok.

Mine is approximately two inches short of the back of the tyre, i.e. in other words, okay for your needs.
I don’t know the model, could be this:

But it was fitted to my bike before I got it.
The picture is deceiving, it does not go past tyre.

The so-called short bottle silencer comes in different forms, I think the one shown on windmill john's bike looks like one of our hosts' own 1950's style systems. All of our hosts' absorbtion type silencers used to be a bit too loud fro my liking, I don't know if that is still the case.
The link in wj's post is this one:
This is the Indian copy of the 50's Redditch original, it has baffles rather than relying on absorbtion, and if it's a good one it will give a nice blat without being overly loud. It's the ancestor of the current torpedo before several rounds of being extended for additional silencing and a catalytic converter.
What you have to watch out for is the inlet pipe on these (in addition to varying quality from manufacturer to manufacturer), there are three different sorts:
1. Short 38mm inlet for long 350 exhaust pipes
2. Short 45mm inlet for long 500 exhaust pipes
3. Longer 45mm inlet for short 500 pipes OR the short 350 pipe with the 45mm collar fitted to your 350
Here one of no. 3 on a 500 pipe, the tailpipe stops short of the back of the bike.

Personally Adrian, mine is too loud for me. I don’t like loud exhausts. I think of others not myself. Please no comments about them being safer! Lot of horses round here.
Mine is with baffles, no wadding.
I believe it is the quietest they do!

I live near the New Forest, so my bikes also have to be reasonably horse-friendly. If the shorty silencers are a little louder than we expect, don't forget silencers got more effective over the years, while a 50's design faithfully reproduced will flow a bit more freely. You can always stick a tailpipe mute in yours if needs a bit less racket.
The silencer shown on the bike is actually pretty well baffled, other similar ones can be a little louder, depend who makes them and how many baffles they fit.

I won’t change for change sake; financial decision. I can look down it and see a baffle similar to the one that is, possibly, retro fitted In the end.
In other words, the only sound reduction I can see is the end item:

and a similar one, part of the bump.

Mr H does a "mute" which takes the crack of an open silencer down to more of a thump.

Yes, got one of these in my high level trials system. I was worried I'd be DQed for a noisy exhaust on my long distance trial and it definately makes it more civilised. Subjectively, it seems to idle better too with the baffle in.
