Interceptor first service

Frustratingly my new Interceptor arrived only two days before the lockdown. Despite this, I am putting a few miles on it with trips to the shops etc. choosing to use the bike rather than the car as it is much more fun and warms up faster.

I am getting near the point that it needs it’s first service 350miles and it looks as though taking the bike back to the shop may not be an option for some time. I could probably do an oil change myself using oil and filter sourced online, I could also possibly check the chain tension but I am reluctant to do the tappets etc. I am considering just doing an oil change and carrying on riding until I can get the rest done, or not doing either for a bit and just delaying the service? I am obviously keen not to risk the health of the bike. What are your thoughts please?

Hello
When I picked mine up last June, the dealer said I could wait until 600 miles before 1st service. In the end I had mine done at about 450 without any problems so you’re probably ok, but maybe best to check with RE importers to confirm...

Hi John

I wouldn't worry about long term

I would be worried about warranty

Is there anyway of contacting the dealership

First service should be easy enough but by doing it yourself you may void the warranty, best to check

Take care all Dai

I heard on the grapevine that RE have extended their warranties in response to the lockdown period. So they are obviously aware this causes issues for their customers and are taking steps to mitigate them. As such, it's probably worth getting in touch with them about it.

I was quite impressed when I heard about this. I doubt many other manufacturers will be doing the same.

Do the tappets on the 650 twins need adjusting?

Thank you all for your advice. I have emailed RE and will await and will post their response when I receive it.

Yes, the tappets are supposed to be adjusted at the first service. I've heard that it's common for clearances to close up during the first few hundred miles. Leaving it too long could start burning the valves.

I have copied this from the RE website. I would also want to contact them... as you say... you e-mailed them, to be sure it's in writing and ok for you.

Dear Royal Enfield Customer
Warranty Period Extension
We have officially announced that through the authorised UK dealer network, we are extending the warranty period by three months on any motorcycle whose period expires between March and May 2020.
This measure has been taken to ensure that customer support and experiences are not negatively impacted by the current lockdown.
Moto GB will continue to monitor the official government and public health directives from across Europe about the closure of all non-essential retailers and should there be an announcement of further extensions to this period, then appropriate amendments to the current warranty extension will be made accordingly.
Please note we introduced Roadside Assistance through our partners Allianz in early 2019 the vehicles that the warranty extension applies to are not linked with RSA service.
Kind regards and please keep safe and well
MotoGB
