I have replaced the gasket on the sprag clutch but the sprag doesn't turn when I tighten the case are there any tips on how to put it back together?

Well, if you've put all the parts back exactly as they should be the other possibility is that the new gasket is made from material which is too thin to give the required end-float. I have had this with gearbox end cover gaskets (the green ones) and have heard of it being a problem with timing cover gaskets too. You might need a second gasket, or else get yourself some thicker gasket paper and cut out your own.

Thankyou, in the end I decided to get rid of the insides remove the electric start and blank it off. That should sort it.

My electra came without the sprag clutch assembly, which I subsequently got from the previous owner for ££ even though it was fcuk ed, I have since removed the starter motor and replaced it with a blank, starts fine with a new concentric premium Carb. As the expense of the replacemet and possible future failure is not a thing to want.

At the same time I used a stepped woodruff key and retarded the ignition by 4 degrees as they say the ignition can be upto 7 degrees advanced to what it should be and there is no way to check.

The bike used to spit back when starting now much better, which would indicate a too advanced ignition and runs fine now, my old matchless g3ls had manual retard lever which mad things easier. I have since upped the gearbox sprocket by 1 tooth and the bike is much better at 60mph but cv-19 has put an end to riding for pleasure. I have just replaced the rear brake shoes to try and get the rear brake better but it was bloody useless but haven't been out to try it, they say the kit to change the gear lever to the rhs(proper side) with the brake on the left improves the force on the brake. Just ordered seals etc to give the front calliper a service during the downtime we have at the moment.

Safe riding

Ian

The new brake shoes will help Ian, but there are two other things you can do that will give you a good rear brake. Firstly, fit the longer operating arm. Secondly ensure you have a straight brake rod. Having that bend in it will guarantee a spongy feeble brake.
