Hi All. Thanks to previous info on this site I have now exposed the auto advance unit removing the exhaust and timing cover My 1957 model has a nut rather than a screw and nut retaining the AA unit on the magnito rotor but I am aware how to remove it by unwinding the nut anticlockwise. Before removing it however I have exposed the points plate on the magnito looking for the 3 screws that apparently hold the magnito, as I understand it, to the timing chest. They do not seem anywhere obvious to me and I am therefore wondering how far I need to go to remove the 'innards' of the magnto to get at them. as I wish to disturb as little as possible given that the cam plate was factory set (63 years ago!) for maximum spark when I reinstall after the relevant testing/repair, Apology if these post seem rather basic as this will be my first time have dealt with this and my mechanical skills are fairly basic. i have set bike to TDC on compression stroke in removing above in the probable forlorn hope that this will minimise disruption on reassembly. Also paint marked timinggears to current position. Any advice appreciated. Thanks Hugh

Hugh,

you won't find them that way!

The magneto body is drilled and tapped for mounting screws in different positions depending on what kind of engine it's fitted to, as this type was also used in stationary and boat engines, as well as AJS and Matchless motorcycles. When flange-mounted, the SR1 uses three ¼" Whitworth cheese-head screws that screw into the BACK of the body, once you get the drive pinion with the advance and retard off, you will see them clearly. See picture below, different mag in this case, but same fastening arrangement.

Please also note the spelling of magneto, it's with an "e", not an "i"!

Thanks Adrian. Thinking about it after post and misreading an earlier comment on these screws just worked it out as probably behind. Magneto - got it been reading various pubs on them so should have got spelling right - blaming old age! Thanks much appreciated. Hugh
