There is a very handy picture of the route oil is supposed to take.
Tank > main pump > crank > sump > scavenge pump > rockers & rods > timing chest > tank

As I understand it (and I expect to be corrected if I'm wrong) it is common for oil to move from the timing chest to the sump and (as Adrian kindly told me) the scavenge pump is big enough to clear this without too much issue. If however the oil is moving direct from the tank to sump that would imply you have a bad seal between the 2 crankcase halves. In the end this may not make a difference to how you manage it though.

Someone more knowledgeable than I may be able to tell you if the oil can overflow from the timing chest into the tank fast enough not to cause a problem. Also if your sump has a tankful of oil in it, it seems likely your crank and flywheel are bathed in oil anyway.
