Redditch gear hardening

This question is a bit of a longhsot. I'm looking to see if I can possibly reclaim a Redditch 4 speed slider gear by recutting the dogs. Does anybody know if the Redditch gears were surface hardened or through hardened? I suspect the former. I am also asking this question on the Royal Enfield 250cc Owners Technical Facebook group.

I don't know the answer, but I recut the dogs on one of the rocking horse poo gears from a unit 350 Bullet some years ago - it had been jumping out of top gear, if I remember right. This fixed the problem and I have yet to hear any complaints.

I suppose ultimately, it should be possible to re-harden the bits if they were only case hardened?

Presumably they used flame hardening. So heat the recut dogs red hot with an oxy-set, quench then heat treat up to straw?

Better to get advice on the specifics of this from someone with more than my theoretical knowledge of this process though.
