Gear jumping

Evening all,
1993 Indian bullet 350 30000kms.
Bike running well, slight problem with jumping out of1st. Into neutral around 20 kph. Happens especially when going uphill and when 2up.
I have had the gearboxi inner and outer covers off and tried adjusting the plunger to no avail.
Bit nervous about pulling out shafts and pinions unless really necessary.
Question is - will this get steadily worse, perhaps killing 1st gear completely as I at the moment can live with it.
Any thoughts , advice most welcome.

You could try tightening the detent a bit.

When mine did this, it was mainly down to chipped dogs on the gear cluster.

It got progressively but slowly worse until you could only hold it in first by holding the lever up. Then I replaced them and had a wee go at the selector quadrant and detent with a needle file to make it look marginally less like it was made by a blind man with an angle grinder during an earthquake.

some very useful info here.
https://accessories.hitchcocksmotorcycl ... ical-Notes

also Pete Snidal's bullet manual has a good section on selector / detent setup.

I tend to agree with stinkwheel. It's likely to be worn or chipped dogs on part number 111070 (Gear, Mainshaft Low Gear). 111069 may also need to be replaced although I got away with replacing 111070 only.

Many thanks for the replies. Had a look at the Don Morley gearbox stuff on this site and it looks pretty damned good. Will not be getting into this until the bike is once again reborn in the spring. Will have another go at Pete Fs suggestion with the detente before advancing into the dark depths of the box innards.

Thanks again chaps
