Just in case there's anyone who's not heard this one...
I've just successfully replaced the foot control ratchet spring, looks a bit like a number 8. (Due to the original breaking and could only engage 1st and 2nd gears.)
Rather than riding home in 1st and second gear, THE NEUTRAL FINDER CAN BE USED TO GET 3rd and 4th.
You can do it while riding, though obviously a bit fiddly, so don't crash due to looking down.
