Yuletide felicitations to one and all. To pick up from some while back, I finally got the compression issue sorted. The inlet valve was not seating anything like properly. So bad it was that I could see daylight if I peered down the inlet tract. I took the head to a local engineering shop who re-cut both valve seats and lapped and re-fitted the valves for me. All for the incredibly reasonable sum of £16. Bike is at last back together, and I am able to put my fourteen stone frame firmly on the kick starter without fear of descent until I use the de-compressor. Bearing in mind how bad the valve seating was, I find it hard to believe the bike actually started and ran at all. Thanks to all for the helpful comments, and happy new year.
